But the model of the immune system that is presented in everything from children’s books to medical school texts need to be updated. The notion that the immune system is a highly trained army waiting to destroy anything that crosses the body’s borders is misleading and incomplete.

We now understand that the body’s goal is not immunity – it is integrity. The body is interested in remaining well and whole in a world teeming with other livings things, each of which is trying to do the same.
