Frequently Asked Questions
- What is ViraWall®?
- ViraWall is a nutritional supplement derived entirely from organically grown Spirulina. In rigorous laboratory tests, ViraWall has been shown to block many viruses from entering cells – a step they must take in order to spread. For this reason, we refer to it as a "viral firewall" - the inspiration for its name.
- Is ViraWall an antiviral medicine? Does it kill viruses?
- Research indicates that ViraWall does not kill viruses. Instead, it appears to block viral endocytosis, the mechanism by which viruses enter and infect cells. Because ViraWall is derived from a 100% nutritional source and works to naturally support the body rather than kill germs, it is considered a nutritional supplement rather than a medicine.
- Does ViraWall have any other benefits?
- ViraWall also exhibits natural anti-inflammatory action through selective COX-2 enzyme inhibition. This property may contribute to the effectiveness of the viral firewall by facilitating apoptosis, a natural process by which virally corrupted cells help limit a virus’s influence by destroying themselves. ViraWall also is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger.
- Does ViraWall block all viruses?
- Researchers believe that ViraWall works by blocking the ability of some viruses to enter cells. It therefore promises to exhibit a wide spectrum of possible benefits. However, the relationship between viral exposure, cellular infection and human disease is quite complex and depends on many factors. To date, ViraWall has clearly demonstrated its viral firewall effects with various strains of influenza type A and type B, Enterovirus 71 and Coxsackie virus A16. Preliminary clinical studies have also suggested the possibility of inhibiting some types of herpes and hepatitis viruses but formal studies have yet to be conducted.
- Will ViraWall prevent or cure the H5N1 bird flu?
- Although we don't represent ViraWall as the cure or prevention for any disease, preliminary laboratory tests indicate that ViraWall does inhibit the entry of the current type A H5N1 bird flu virus into cells. In addition, ViraWall has proven effective in protecting cells from other, potentially lethal strains of the type A influenza virus. Again, we are not suggesting that ViraWall by itself will prevent or cure any disease. However, a wealth of scientific research demonstrates that ViraWall may contribute substantially to the body’s natural mechanisms of defense.
- Is ViraWall safe?
- ViraWall has been shown to protect cells at extremely low, totally safe concentrations. In laboratory cell culture tests, ViraWall did not exhibit toxic effects until very large concentrations were introduced. In cell culture studies, ViraWall exhibited a 50% toxic response (LC50) only when cells were exposed to more than 2800 times the 50% effective dose (IC50). By comparison, in the same study the prescription antiviral medication Tamiflu® (oseltamivir) showed the same level of toxicity at only 72 times its effective dose. Finally, ViraWall is derived from an organic nutrient, the microalgae Spirulina platensis, which has been used for centuries as an exceptionally nutritious food.
- What is the best way to use ViraWall?
- ViraWall should be taken on a daily basis as a supplementary nutrient. A typical serving is 2 tablets a day. It can also be taken as desired when traveling or entering crowded places, as often as 1 or 2 tablets every 2 hours. ViraWall can also be used whenever its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or firewall effects may provide extra benefits.
- ViraWall is more expensive than many other nutritional supplements. Why is this?
- ViraWall's primary active ingredients are a complex of proteins used by the living spirulina organism to capture light to make cellular energy. These proteins are collectively known as the phycocyanin or phycobiliprotein complex. These compounds, particularly the highly bioactive allophycocyanin and C-phycocyanin fractions found in ViraWall, are very expensive to extract and purify. In fact, research laboratories pay as much as $13 per milligram for them. At that rate, a month's supply of ViraWall would cost more than $100,000 instead of $79.95!
- If phycocyanin is so expensive to produce, why is ViraWall so much less costly?
- Immunecology can offer ViraWall at a reasonable price because of a newly developed, patented process that efficiently extracts and purifies phycocyanin from spirulina. In addition, our production process is fully integrated, from organic aquaculture using pure, spring-fed mountain water through extraction, purification, compounding and packaging. And unlike laboratory applications where specific forms of phycocyanin must be totally isolated from all other substances, ViraWall’s phycocyanin complex includes a variety of other synergistic, naturally occurring nutrients that enhance its effect. Finally, Immunecology has made a commitment to bring this unique and important product to the marketplace at an affordable price. If the Spirulina used to make a single box of ViraWall were instead made into capsules or tablets, its retail value would be approximately $600.
- How is ViraWall supplied?
- A box of ViraWall contains 60 oral lozenges, each of which contains 250 milligrams of our patented phycocyanin complex. When allowed to dissolve in the mouth, in addition to absorption throughout the body these lozenges also form a coating along the mouth and throat - the primary port of entry for influenza and intestinal viruses. A standard adult serving of ViraWall is 2 lozenges per day. For adults over 200 pounds, we recommend using 3 lozenges. For children up to 120 pounds, we recommend one lozenge daily. Of course, additional lozenges may be used at any time during the day, especially when traveling, entering crowds or spending time near individuals who may be ill.
In the future we will also introduce a special ViraWall granule compound for smaller children. These tasty granules are easy for young children to use and provide the same benefits as ViraWall lozenges. In addition, the children's formula has been designed to extend the firewall effect into the small intestines. We did this because children are at greater risk from intestinal viruses such as Enterovirus and Coxsackie virus - two potentially serious pathogens that can cause illness, paralysis and death in children.
- How much does ViraWall cost?
- A box of 60 ViraWall 250 mg lozenges costs $79.95 plus shipping. Under typical conditions, this represents a month's supply for adults or two months for children up to 120 pounds.
